Well it's now Tuesday morning here in Regina Sask. I wonder how much rain will come today. ANd this is a province where it never rains.. I guess the folks in southwestern Saskatchewan have had more than their share of rains.

This past Saturday did a quick trip to Saskatoon to pick up my son-in-law at the hospital and bring him back home. Ride was uneventful.

However he had to spend a night at the hospital to ensure some broken stitches did not mean he would continue to lose lots of blood. He's home now taking it easy.

Looking forward to continuing to cheer on my grandchildren in their various activities.

Beginning to start up my income tax preparation service in my new location. Will get more active as time goes on.

Also yesterday started search for part time work. Had a wonderful insightful interview with a recruiter yesterday. She made several serious changes to my existing resume to reflect 21st century human resource attitudes. I hope these changes will make my job search somewhat easier.

Father's Day Musings

Well it's 'father's day' which I won't be marking. I am a father and have had a father. But like mother's day five or six weeks ago I find the celebration of both days quite 'corny'. We should respect our mothers and fathers every day of the year. One can argue the second Sunday in May and the third Sunday in June are creations of the greeting card, floral, and chocolate industries.

Had a wonderful experience yesterday. Taking son-in-law from hospital in Saskatoon to home in Regina.

Also am helping our daughter in search for more appropriate accommodation here in town.

So we are in the weekend before the G8/G20. Will see how it unfolds. I heard one person (no idea where) suggest we should do away with in person type leader summits if they have to be so expensive. Also isn't it the case that mosts decisions coming out of these types of things are confirmations of agreements already arrived at?

Electronic communications amongst the G8/G20 leaders would reduce all the concerns about costs.

I am starting a new short term project tomorrow - a search for a part time job.

Also readers of this blog... while I will still be linking this blog to facebook I think I will be changing my business and personal emails one again. My two gmail.com addresses were for transition purposes. I am not a fan of how gmail organizes messages into 'conversations' rather than threads and will be resuiming my traditional email software useage in next day or so.

happenings - First full day in new city + other

Well I guess the highlight of the past 24 hours was watching 'slugger' play ball last evening. Our 7 year old grandson - the one whose dad is unwell - plays baseball here in Regina. He is one of the team's better hitters. Fielding..well that's another issue - I remember years ago when I coached softball that the largest problem for fielders is to 'PAY ATTENTION'.

Hoping to hear of arrival of furniture soon...............

Well there is a furore over comments by a NDP MP over the Middle East. The Middle East is a 'hot potato' no matter what position one takes. I have previously said I support a two state solution with equal access to all religious sites; and end to Israeli settlements on Palestinian lands (i.e, West Bank), internationalization of Jerusalem, compensation (in negotiated form) for all persons who are refugees, ending incitement on both sides etc. etc. Any alterations in borders can occur with the agreement of both parties.

What really is needed is both sides to recognize the legitimacy of the other's narrative. Regrettably those who tend to speak on this issue demonstrate a lack of recognition.

I also believe the vast majority of residents in Israel and Palestine do wish for a real peace. Only a small minority continue to strive for 'victory'.

Day Five is Done - Wrap Up - Good News on Another Front

Reached our destination yesterday. Actually reached it twice as you shall see.

Entered Saskatchewan early yesterday morning.. felt good to be driving in province where we lived for over 3 decades and have made the decision to return.

Drove right through Regina as we decided to make quick trip to Saskatoon to see our son-in-law. Are we ever glad we did....

He appeared in much better condition than we have seen in a long time. He looked vibrant and sounded so. He said his pain was less than before. The attending staff said his condition was improving. They indicated they were considering moving him from the 'observation' part of his ward to a regular hospital bed.

There seemed to be a possibility that he could even return home in a few days...quite uncertain for now.. but it was great to hear that....

Overnighted back in Regina and today start a mulititude of 'settling' in tasks... mind you biggest job won't occur until our furniture arrives... in next day or so.

Saw daughter, her boyfriend, and 3 grandsons last evening.. great to see them all...

Staying with a couple of long-time friends.. we have known for between 30 and 40 years - in fact he is friend we have known the longest of all people in Saskatchewan. Met him at a University of Saskatchewan class in the fall of 1969.

Oh and BTW, we saw another deer on the roadway... I guess this trip as been for a real 'dear' purpose ((:-))

Day Four Is Done

Well finally drove out of Ontario today... we have driven between eastern Ontario and Saskatchewan several times over the years. Ontario is a vast province..so much to traverse the entire province.

Had a short surprise today (a repeat of one we had on day one.. sorry I forgot to mention it)...we saw a deer by the side of the road. So far then two deer, one bear, and one boat trailer incident ((:-)).

Got as far as Brandon Manitoba. Tomorrow arrive back 'home' in the great province of Saskatchewan. Plans are to visit son-in-law at hospital during course of the day.

Our trip is not only thing underway in world ((:-)). Been following some of the FIFA World Cup scores. Don't have a strong team preference... but for no apparent reason I think I'll cheer for Switzerland.

Day Three is Done

Not too interesting day but we did get to see the beauty of the shoreline of Ontario's Lake Superior - by far the largest of the Great Lakes in North America. Did have one surprise today... this morning we slowed down the car suddenly as a black bear was standing by edge of road. One we stopped the bear scampered across the road and into the bush.

We travelled over 700 kilometres (450 miles for US readers) ending the day on the west side of Lake Superior at Thunder Bay.

We keep getting reports on how our son-in-law is doing. We remain hopeful but know he is not 'out of the woods yet'. We have decided to make a detour on our way into Regina - our final destination. Monday morning we will drive from wherever we stay Sunday night to Saskatoon where our son-in-law remains in hospital. We've heard it may be many days until he comes home from the hospital.

Day Two is Done

Well the second day of our trip saw us pass trees, trees, and more trees. But as those who see this blog through its link on facebook or read my status on facebook and twitter know we had an unforseen 'hiccup' in our progress.

Had stopped for coffee this morning at a certain oft frequented place (named after a former hockey player) and just about finished coffee when I noticed a guy closely examining our car. Went out there and found he had accidentally scraped our car with a boat and its trailer. We pleasantly exchanged information about each other - he freely admitted he was responsible.

This 'hiccup' happened in Sudbury.. Found out that community has a unique (at least I did not know it before) system for reporting MV accidents. They have an office (that says it is not part of the police department) that plays the role of a police department in receiving MV accident reports. The staff there were quite pleasant and I imagine if an upset person showed up there, I think the staff would rapidly put them at ease.

Anyways after a two hour delay we motored on...ended up stopping today in Sault Ste Marie - at the easternmost end of Lake Superior.

After yesterday's blog we heard from a friend of our son-in-law. He had surgery yesterday with both good and some worrisome results.... but I remain cautiously optimistic.

Day One is Done

Well an relatively uneventful first day of our travels. Headed out west on Transcanada Highway No. 17 by middle of the afternoon. Most common site along the road is trees.. and trees.. and you now something... more trees. We've taken this road before and we know that trees are always nearby in this part of Canada.

I've heard that trees, rocks and rivers are the dominant landmarks in much of Canada. This is so true of what we saw today and will be true for the next few days.

We got as far as North Bay Ontario.

Anxiously awaiting word from Saskatoon over our son-in-law's surgery...

Day One of Our Journey

It's about a quarter after 9 in the morning. We have 4 people here to load our stuff in a huge moving truck.. told that the truck when full may have up to 9 loads.

Lead driver wants us to think about earlier delivery at destination than originally planned... unsure if we will agree to that....

It's cloudy today in Ottawa. It's the end of a 7 1/2 year residency in the National Capital Area. What an exciting time to spend in this area. In 7 1/2 years so much of my life has changed. Things occurred here and in Saskatchewan that have profoundly affected my life and that of those closest to me.

We lost a daughter during our stay. Our grandsons quadrupled in number.

I began to know what health challenges can arise all of a sudden. One can appreciate the marvels of PUBLIC health care in Canada when one needs to use it. Beginning in 2003 I was diagnosed with a series of 'aging' conditions... but decided very early to not be upset about them....after all there really is no point in being upset at things you cannot change.

I 'changed' in the 7 1/2 years. Had some unique relationships which I will never forget. Befriended a young woman (now deceased) who had multiple complex issues but never lost her sunny disposition.

I was an active volunteer 'visiting' with folks with various 'challenges' in their lives. Always a challenge in these situations between wanting to 'change the world' and 'accepting things as they are'...sometimes got 'into trouble' being too much of a 'advocate' but usually was welcomed into these situations and life situations.

What started out as a temporary job 7 years ago led to the creation of an income tax preparation business which has now operated for 7 years and provides service to over 300 folks. This business will continue in Saskatchewan.

In a few hours we begin the journey... stay tuned for periodic /regular progress updates.

The Journey begins (sort of)

Well bright and early this morning we are up and 'at it'. In a little while a friendly group of people show up who we refer to loosely as 'the packers'. Our residence is a 'mess' and will be for the next day and a half... however we are quite used to it having moved lots of times in past four decades.

A few random comments:

Merger of two political parties on the centre left in Canada... are they serious? I don't really know... maybe a post-election coalition makes more sense in the short term. But if it takes a merger to return Canada's federal politics to a more 'reasonable'attitude on social policy, foreign aid, justice, economic development, then 'so be it'.

We are eagerly awaiting news out of Saskatoon .. likely to come tomorrow or Friday. Many readers of this blog know we have a son-in-law battling cancer. Tomorrow he has surgery in Saskatoon...we are cautiously optimistic.

Good Byes Continue

Had nice visit to Kingston today. Said my goodbyes to members of the Reform Jewish Synagogue in Kingston. Received nice hopes of best wishes. Also spent some time with in-laws and with a long time client who has decided to change his bookkeeper/tax preparer because of my pending relocation.

And speaking of relocation... I think I will try to blog every day of our trip.. so stay tuned.

I see the political elites in both NDP and Libs are against coalition politics before an election. Egos can be a problem when thinking 'outside the box'....

Unlike our Prime Minister I don't believe coalitions are only for winners and not for 'losers'. Coalitions are arrangements between politial partners to govern a polity according to agreed upon policies/arrangements.

We are concluding our last full week in eastern Ontario tomorrow with a trip to Kingston for a Shabbat morning service and time with my inlaws.

Two nights ago I attended my last condominium board meeting. Those of you who live in condominiums should consider at some time participating in your board. It is a wonderful way of finding out, in detail, what is happening in your condo. Condo board members are a small group of extremely dedicated individuals. Condominium owners/residents need to be thankful that this small group of people continue tirelessly to work on their behalf.

My own view is the 'left of centre' political elements in this country may have to do what the right of centre did a few years ago. If Libs; NDP; and to a lesser extent the Greens and BQ stay separate parties, our country will be under an increasingly conservative government.

But I suspect any formal union is some time away. I think current leadership egos would prevent any real progress on some type of interparty agreement at least NOT until after next federal election.

Happenings

As many know we are relocating to Saskatchewan in a few weeks. This morning said 'good bye' to many folks at our synagogue here in Ottawa. Had expected some mention of our departure but was surprised to receive annual volunteer award. Quite touched at being recognized for our volunteer work in our synagogue.

I have mentioned to more than one person, that the Rabbi at Ottawa's Reform Jewish synagogue is in many ways a 'coach' as well as 'teacher'. He is very good at enabling volunteers. Not all professional staff in non-government organizations are good at doing this. But the professional staff at Temple Israel in Ottawa are different.

Today was one of a series of 'farewell' type events we are having the past few weeks into early June. Even though we have been in eastern Ontario for only 7 1/2 years we have established wonderful relationships. I have ongoing relationships with over 300 people as a result of my seasonal income tax preparation business. We have relationships with many folks both in synagogues in Ottawa and Kingston.

The wonderful thing about living in the 21st century is the ease with which one can maintain relationships despite vast geographical distances. Almost all the relationships I have discussed in this post will continue after our relocation.

Long Weekend Musings

Isn't it nice there is almost universal agreement respecting the Auditor General's request for MP's to let her office view their expenses. My sense is most MP's are feeling the heat during their recent break and a way will be found to let her office view their expensees.

It's a bit unfortunate that some more 'right wing' folks in our society will use this to again 'whip' up hysteria about politicians' expenses. A more 'savvy' attitude by MP's when the request was made would have saved everyone a lot of grief.

Social media (or social networking) continues to increase it impact on our society. Retweeted an article saying Twitter may have saved lives in the turmoil in Bangkok.

I agree with those who have decried the individuals responsible for the RBC Bank in Ottawa. What an effective way to put the breaks on real social change.

Getting closer to major relocation in early June. Had enjoyable visit with inlaws yesterday...

Coalitions and Electoral Reform

We need electoral reform in Canada!! People are cynical about politics and politicians. Why is our turnout so low in elections? More and more people just don't care!!

We need to explore coalition governing and politics in Canada. We need to not be afraid of compromising at least some long-held principles.

Our political system is broke. An ideological-based party seems 'entrenched' in power with only 30-35% of the popular vote. It is really unfair.

So-called progressive Canadians need to work together to restore the Canadian political system. So-called conservative Canadians have shown it can be done.

I am coming of the view we need Liberals and New Democrats to get over years of hostility to each other. Otherwise we are 'doomed' to more years of what are called 'George Bush lite' policies of our current federal government.

HST

Attended a seminar on the coming HST in Ontario yesterday. Had one question to find answer out and got it quite easily. I needed to know the answer, as I am relocating to a province that doesn't have a HST and sounds like it is in no hurry to get one. I run a small income tax preparation business and have clients in several provinces.

My new understanding is as a GST registrant, I will automatically be a HST registrant. I will have to collect HST if a client resides in (as of July 1, 2010) BC, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. If a client lives in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, or Prince Edward Island, or the territories I have to collect GST only.

My understanding is that the type of service I provide is not a taxable (provincially) service in the non-HST jurisdictions and even if it is, I am not obliged to collect it. Of course that could change if other provinces sign on to an HST type agreement with the federal government.

Elsewhere I have indicated my own views on the HST - a 'necessary evil' whose regressive impact needs to be 'cushioned' by credits/grants paid to low and moderate income earning individuals/families. I am also alarmed at the anti-tax coalition against the HST. I find the anti-tax coalitions are composed of unholy alliances made up of what are frankly 'opportunists'.

Bank Tax

See media full of Canadian government Cabinet Ministers 'globetrotting' around the world campaigning against a bank tax to cover future bailouts...

Let's see...our government opposed a bank tax because our banks did relatively well during the recession. Hmmmm...as if doing well means one should not take steps to protect a whole industry/economy to ensure problems don't arise again.

Seems this is a case where our government is once against pitting folks against each other. The 'folks against each other' are now the banks in Canada and elsewhere. In this age of globalization what affects one financial sector seems to affect all financial sectors worldwide. Should all banks participate in providing necessary resources to help bail out any future difficulties? Or should governments, like ours, continue to appeal to nationalistic sentiments suggesting that 'our" banks shouldn't be asked to help out other banks?...

Of course bank profits have been rising rapidly in recent months. My own particular bank made $1.3 billion in just 90 days some time ago.. they are so so hard done by!!

"us against them" seems to be a mantra of the current federal government.

Equity and Diversity

I am writing this while participating in my last meeting of the City of Ottawa's Equity and Diversity Advisory Committee. This is group of up to 15 residents of Ottawa who meet monthly to 'advance' the city's commitment to equity and diversity. They are a sincere group of folks who really do want to make an impact.

Do they? If one is looking for concrete results sometimes one can wonder. But clearly from anecdotal if not 'scientifically proven' experience the committee has had some real success since its inception about a decade ago.

Well still working on tax returns.. not nearly as hectic as during tax season but still few to do...why do some clients wait until after tax season...many do so willingly so it's less hectic; others do so as they don't owe money; and others.. well just procrastinate ((:-)). But my clients are the 'lifeblood' of my business so who am I to complain ((:-)).

Spent a week in Saskatchewan a few days ago. Saw our family. Grandsons are growing...newest one (4 months old) contributed to 2 sleepless nights for my wife and me. But he's loads of fun...

Glad our federal politicians came to an agreement on document disclosure. Gee they CAN work together when they want to...but only because no one of them wants an election...which is becoming long overdue in my view....

Speaking of not wanting something I see most MP's don't want Auditor General reviewing their expenses.. have they something to hide.....

As many of you know we are returning to Saskatchewan next month.. tomorrow we get to say 'best wishes' to lots of friends and customers....

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Today and tomorrow have an opportunity to cheer on our 7 year old grandson (the one whose father is sick) at a ball practice and game (weather permitting). It will be great to see him involved in this type of activity.

Our 12 year old grandson (when he is not 'hanging out' with friends) tells me his major sporting interest is playing football. As we are going to be much closer to him we may be able to make his interest a reality.

Oh and we intend to take him to a Riders game... GO RIDERS GO

Saw some old friends yesterday which was quite nice.....visiting a very dear friend later on today.

Really enjoying current trip now... housing arrangements for after our move are in place....

Saskatchewan Goings On

In middle of week long visit to Saskatchewan. Looking forward to relocation here in June.. Yes if you haven't guessed it from earlier posts we are returning to this province in middle of June. We spent 33 years in Saskatchewan (31 in Regina) and it has become 'home' to us.. While we grew up in eastern Ontario, the bulk of our 'lives' have been in Saskatchewan.

My wife and I first talked about moving back to Saskatchewan last summer when we celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in both Regina and Ottawa. But a severe health challenge affecting the caregiver of our second grandson made us move up our move back. Our families in eastern Ontario first expressed serious concern over such a move.. but health crisis for our son-in-law makes them fully understand why we have moved this relocation forward by several years.

We have seen our son-in-law twice so far. He is trying to keep a good face but is in a high level of pain and knows he is quite sick. Apparently there is a considerable family history of this condition.

We hope any of you who believe in any supreme power will offer your requests for healing for Gerry Laliberte, 46 years old, fighting colon cancer (3rd stage).

Thank you very much for reading this post and any prayers you say for our son-in-law.

Various Stuff

Writing this post from Calgary airport en route for visit to family and friends in Saskatchewan. A good 'post tax season' get away even though not everything is done... But pressure time is over at least for now.

Still have some responsibilities in NGO's in Ottawa. Dealt with one of them by phone and email from here.

Very happy at upbeat mood of son-in-law with whom I spoke a day or so ago.

Others are commenting on current happenings in Parliament. From where I sit, the Speaker's ruling on detainee documents was a good one. Parliamentarians of all stripes must co-operate to ensure MPs have access.

I hear folks still venting about HST. Do those who vent have an alternative to ensure public agency has resources to carry on all the worthwhile public programs and services? Consumption taxes like HST are regressive but low income earner tax credits/rebates lessen impact. One can argue about levels of credits/rebates but the reality is consumption taxes are here to stay.

winding down and going forward

Slowly but surely unwinding from income tax season... lots of loose ends to clean up ..but easily manageable in next little while.

Pleasant job in days ahead.. get to visit our daughter and grandsons in Saskatchewan.. always an important part of one's life. Family is important.

Some readers here may know we are relocating from current residence in Canada's capital back to Saskatchewan to be closer to family. We've heard of lots of people moving to be closer to children and grandchildren. Never really thought we would be doing same.. but so is life.

Have advised income tax clients this is 'in the works'.. hope to retain most of them next year - the wonders of email/scan/fax/PDF makes life so much more convenien these days.

It's Over (Sort of)

April 30, 2010 has come and gone. Glad that the high intensity workload of income tax preparation season has completed. Still have a number of files to clean up or should I say clear up. Once again the 300+ folks have shown wonderful support for my income tax preparation business.

But in this world and this life things keep moving along...just three days to wind stuff up (at least partly wind stuff up) from tax season and then off to another 'adventure' in our lives. More to come later

Just Shocking

Saw recent article in media regarding federal government's treatment of Abousfian Abdelrazik. It's just terrible this guy cannot work as he is on some list. Our government apparently refuses to help him get off the list.

He is a Canadian cleared of all terrorist ties by our security agencies but because of US actions (during Bush years) he is on a no-fly list.... and his government (that is our government) won't help him.

As the Season Unfolds

Preoccupied with income tax preparation activities the last week (which is why I have quiet here and likely will be the next few weeks). Pace of work seems similar to previous years despite mobility challenges...the ankle stuff. It is also progressing nicely.

Physiotherapist has suggeseted I may be driving again in a week or so. It won't come soon enough.

Having a wide variety of clients means a wide variety of situations...learning new things every day in this business.

Many many clients quite understanding of plans to relocate business later on this year.

When Will Our Politics Mature

Heard news reports from Liberal 'thinkfest' in Montreal suggesting maybe.. just maybe... someone will have the political 'skill' and 'strength' to talk about ways to ensure our public sector has the capacity to make needed investments in Canada. We need to have leaders that are willing to talk about public finances and initiate conversations with our electorate about tax adjustments.

But anyone who suggests that is 'shouted' down by the anti-tax lobby in Canada. This lobby has been around for about 20-30 years and their sole purpose in life is to weaken the public sector's ability to make significant investments in social housing, education, welfare, income redistribution etc. etc.

You know about a year and a half ago we had a federal election in Canada. The advocates of some type of tax on carbon were 'creamed' by the voters. But that idea seems to have been good public policy. Yet the anti-tax crowd.. now exemplified by our current federal government went on a savage attack agains the idea.

As a result political leaders in Canada are 'chicken' about taxes and immature to boot. The party that initiates such a discussion in a serious way in this country will have my support whenever the next election comes.

Thursday Morning Musings

Ankle continues to heal nicely. Seeing physiotherapist once a week and getting exercises to strengthen ankle area...using a 'walking cast'... I hope by end of month to be ready to stop using it.. but only time will tell.

The Ann Coulter affair..true it looks bad when the controversy prevented her organizers from allowing her speaking engagement to proceed. In a free democracy it is always better to hear what 'crazy' folks have to say even if one disagrees with them.... but in our democracy we do have laws prohibiting incitement against identifiable groups.

The official from the University of Ottawa who sent the cautionary note to Ms. Coulter was probably trying to help the situation but may have inadvertently heightened the controversy.

Also if media reports are correct the meeting organizers tried to 'stack' meeting with her supporters.

Anyways she speaks in Calgary tonite and presumably anything interesting that is said will be widely reported. She does say things that are uncomfortable and unpleasant to hear. Her alleged joke about ways for Muslims to travel was uncalled for and worthy of public criticism. Her post 911 comments were very objectionable.

Otherwise keeping busy with my tax preparation business...will be posting fewere times until end of April.

Sitting at a public library 2 hours away from 'home base'... mixing business with personal stuff today...

Just saw tweet about criticism by some folks of pro gay and lesbian rights in context of new Human Rights Museum being built in Winnipeg... you know some people just don't get it....in this, the 21st century in Canada.. how can any thinking Canadian be upset at promotion of rights of minorities.

I also have difficult with 'face covering' concerns in Quebec (and other places).. we should be celebrating cultural differences in our great country.

So our federal government is working to support maternal and child health in developing countries....and it reluctantly agreeds to include 'family planning'.. oh how good of them.

A few days ago it announced it would not support family planning. At least over the last few days they realized how out of touch with reality they were.

But they still have trouble with a woman's right to choose. We have enshrined that right in our country.. but our government refuses to sanction it in other countries. As is happening more and more often their 'base' is bringing out old ideological positions to argue for once again.

Our Prime Minister took a good position some time ago that the issue of same sex marriage was no longer worthy of public discourse. But now his government seems to want to revive the controversy over pregnancy termination. All studies I have seen say real economic development occurs in those countries of the world where women control their bodies and their destinies. Women everywhere must have access to safe ways to go through a pregnancy or if they wish to safely and legally terminate a pregnancy.

Anything less makes our world less equitable to all....

Saw surgeon on Monday who said I CAN put weight on foot... Gee it feels good!!!!

This allows me to do things like prepare my own meals in our apartment. It's great not ot have to rely on my caregiver/life partner for all meals.. HOpe to get rid of walker this weekend.. and maybe a week later to stop needing a 'walking cast'. Physiotherapist reminded me other day to 'take it easy' but to work at it...she gave me a few exercise and tips to help out recovery.

Tax preparation business 'clicking along'. Meeting a number of new very interesting clients.

It's been a few days...mixing it up with three things in my life... first is preparation of income tax returns...lots of work to do even if I am less 'ambulatory' than usual. So many of my clients are quite accommodating in bringing their tax papers to me.

Unsure if I am progessing as fast as I could but seem to be turing around a lot of customer returns.

The other thing in my life is beginning to disengage from various voluntary activities in the Ottawa area. As we approach a major relocation in June, this will become an increasing part of my days. We've been in Ottawa a little over 7 years but have established so many relationships. (We are considering seriously a going away social to say 'good bye' to many of our good friends).

And there is the ankle.. oh the ankle.. still avoiding putting any weight on it... see surgeon next Monday ... I hope things will change but am unsure.

Musings on Federal Budget

Lots of topics to chat about here. I like idea of second year of stimulus funding. I also like changes to have banks only hold on to cheques for 4 days; and to allow consumers access to first $100 within 24 hours. Having just heard banks reporting record profits (again) I am sure this move won't hurt banks and will help consumers.

I was disappointed in announced cutbacks to foreign aid.

The 'rigidity' of restraint measures will not help Canadians. So many folks seem to think the providers of public service are 'running amok'. As one who used to be a public servant I know public sector employees are just as conscientious about spending money as are employees in the private sector. We are all taxpayers so we all benefit by prudent public sector spending. But I really have issues with those in our media (especially radio talk show hosts) who blame all our ills on 'public sector' greed.

There were 'glimmers' of hope in political reaction to yesterday's budget. I saw some indication of a willingness to compromise on some issues...I wonder if our federal government will show some flexibility on some contentious issues. Who knows, if they did, we may get some real co-operation amongst the federal political parties. Wouldn't that be nice!

Mid week Musings

Getting used to air cast on my ankle...nice to be able to take it off once in a while. Also a friend of our is to loan us a bench to let me sit in the tub and have a proper bath/shower which I have been unable to do so far...sponge baths just aren't the same ((:-))

Tax preparation season is well under way. The ankle is presenting some challenges but we seem to be coping. My caregiver/life partner/wife is so accommodating in driving me around.

Awaiting with 'baited breath' the resumption of our federal Parliament. Somehow I have this 'feeling' we will quickly see real attempts at interparty co-operation (oh how naive can I be at sometimes), or a return of hyperpartisan politics. If the latter occurs, my only consistent and continuing reaction will be... bring the election on!!

A few topics today.

Had great success putting current condominium on market...have conditional sale in less than 3 days. The journey of 2010 continues.

Enjoyed watching Olympics but GLAD they're over. Congratulations to Canada's athletes on a good performance at these games.

A little concerned at the predominance of one sport. Seems like most of the Canadian media were disproportionately concerned over results in one event. Men's hockey is an important sport in Canada but one wonders why it monopolizes coverage. I fear we may have gone into a national 'funk' if the men's team had lost yesterday. But one has to always remember it is ONLY A GAME.

Also meet with surgeon today about the healing of my ankle. Hope to make progress with newer less bothersome cast.

A New Journey

Life's a continuous journey with significant turns at various times. One frequently ponders changes and sometimes second guesses them after they occur. When I look back at my 60 some years I can identifty several turning points that were significant (and life changing).

Well 2010 will see another turn in our live stories. It will take several months for this turn to fully occur.

But we started our turn last night. We have put our condominium on the market here in Ottawa. We have been advised the state of our local real estate market is that it will sell relatively quickly.

Just casually watching Olympics reviews and news this morning and saw reference to Maxime Bernier and climate change. A government back bencher making remarks questioning the validity of widely accepted scientific opinion that our world is facing the challenge of climate change.

Maxime Bernie is not an ordinary government back bencher. He's a former cabinet minister who is rumoured in some quarters to be heading back to the ministry some day soon.

I fear that our federal governing party still has climate change deniers in its midst. It seems that party continues to have active members who question the existence of climate change. I can only hope that when the election finally comes our ratonal electorate will rise up and 'spank' those who just don't get it on climate change.

Putting Things into Perspective

I was most appreciative of that reminder. Too often all of us think we have it bad. We do all have challenges but must understand others' may have more significant and long term challenges.

Relationships - Keys to Our Lives

Almost finished my first full week of wearing cast as my ankle heals. Was reminded that after my six week 'cast' period there will be a period of rehabilitation. Strongly hope it won't interfere too much in April which is the culmination of each year's tax preparation seasion.

I do volunteer driving for a local social service agency. I also drive a group of seniors to a local Jewish community centre social activity. This week I have received moving emails and greeting cards from people in both groups. Their words of encouragement have been moving to say the least.

I am currently co-ordinating an outreach/conversion class at a Ottawa synagogue. Earlier this week a pot of plants arrived with a card from the 'class'. A totally unexpected surprise.

I was to be in Kingston today leading a local synagogue service. It was cancelled (the synagogue is quite small) with a request that members send me get well wishes.. and within minutes of being notified, several of them emailed me with heartwarming messages.

Being laid up in tax preparation season is problematic in a significant sense. But my clients have reacted quite positively to my suggested alternatives to my going to their place to pick up tax papers. Many have agreed to wait until after I have my cast off. Other have agreed to accommdate me in other ways.

Personal Experience with Public Health Care System

This past Saturday I slipped on some ice in a parking lot near my home. Passersby immediately came to my assistance. I was able to get into a local store and the people there removed my boot and saw a large swelling on my right foot. They called an ambulance and when they arrived, the emergency medical people said I should go the hospital and they thought there were some breaks and possible dislocation.

Shortly after arrrival at Ottawa's Montfort Hospital I was treated at a 'fast track' area to determine if I did not have to stay very long. But this changed quickly as xrays showed a dislocation and three breaks in bones in my right ankle. I was admitted to the hospital. Prior to going to my room though, they did a wonderfully painless short procedure to relocate my ankle bone. As it would hurt tremendously they gave me what I can call an instantaneous anesthetic. I recall lights moving and thought I kept chatting (as is my wont) but then realized the bone was no longer swelling (I had been asleep for maybe 30 seconds)

After admission I was told surgery would likely occur on Sunday. Well after several false expectations I was told on late Sunday it was postponed to Monday. About 2:00 PM on Monday I had the surgery. It went well...was 'joking around a bit' with the surgeon, aneasthetist (sp?), recovery room staff etc. etc. One staff person kidded me about giving out my PIN when I was in the recovery room but still 'out of it' ((:-))

The hospital sent me home yesterday. I am now using a two wheel waker to get around our residence. My wife and best friend is pushing me in a small 'wheelchair' device when going to and from our car.

Here's my POINT. This experience at the hospital reinforced my view of our Canadian Health Care system. Is it the BEST we have here in Canada. The staff I dealt with were a marvellous group of men and women. They try to meet all various personal needs of patients. They are also very patient with patient idiosyncracies (and yes I have some too).

They have an always present happy disposition.

I have now even less patience with those private health care advocates. We do have mixed health care system when looking at the overall system.. but the public part is alive and well. May it flourish forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Olympics Blog

What a wonderful arrangement.... once every four years the world's best athletes gather to compete in the Olympic Games. A wonderful time when representatives of different countries get along.

Wouldn't it be nice if all differences between countries could be resolved on the slopes, ice rinks, bobsled or luge runs? Gee think what a wonderful world we would have if all nations and peoples could live in peace. We would only see disputes over who could do it swifter, higher, or stronger.

Ah.. such a utopian vision? Why cannot it be done?

An Upsetting But Worthwhile Read

Just finished going through Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism" a ringing condemnation of what is referred to as the "Chicago School" of economics.

It portrays a history of 'shocks' in many many countries ever since the Chilean coup of 1973. She traces the application of 'shocks' to both economies in many countries and also is quite explicit on governing authorities usages of torture and other human rights violations to go along with 'economic shocks'.

While the book is unpleasant to read in many cases it is a 'must read' for anyone wishing a progressive analysis of what happened in our world the last four decades.

Banks and Mortgages

Let's see ....the banks are asking the Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Minister of Finance to tighten up mortage rules in Canada.

As I heard this morning on our local CBC station, there seems to be a question of 'responsibility' (my term). Mortgages are fully secured by property...and insured to boot. If a borrower defaults the lender can rely on insurance. They can also foreclose on the property.

The banks believe our mortgage rules are too easy....yet who decides on mortgage approval. Of course the banks themselves do it. Anyone who has tried to obtain a mortgage knows the lenders are the ones to 'approve' the mortgage.

So if our mortgage rules are too easy why cannot a lender simply apply a less easy rule.. oh of course, in a competitive economy (which we are supposed to have) that might mean a bank that applied a tougher standard would lose business.

Using this argument suggests the motivation behind the banks' wishes is not some altruistic concern about public welfare. They seem to not want to be unpopular with prospective borrowers. They want the government to 'toughen' up mortgage lending rules so when prospective borrowers complain, they, the banks can always blame the 'government'.

They invariably want their cake and eat it too.. so it seems....

Politicians Own Health

Everyone is rightly saying the right things about Jack Layton's disclosure of a health challenge. He joins the likes of Preston Manning, Allan Rock, and Max Keeping (a local TV news anchor here in Ottawa) who were very public with similar conditions.

My gender is traditionally quite reluctant to share details of what is often an uncomfortable issue. These gentlemen deserve our highest praise for opening up their health issues for all to see.

Quite the contrast with the situation involving the Premier from Newfoundland. Maybe someday, we will all understand why whatever procedure he had, could not have been done in Canada.

But in the absence of hard information, it is upsetting to see his situation being used by right wing American anti-health care activists as a 'poster case' for problems in Canada's health care system.

Parliamentary Stuff - Master Wedgers

So the government is proposing a modification to parliamentary schedule in March and April... how 'wise' of them.

To think if they were less 'wedge'-oriented... they would have not prorogued parliament, removed much of the anxt out there about them, prevented all the wonderful activity of January 23, and likely still be ahead in the polls.

The idea of making up some of the lost time makes sense but even cannot erase bad feelings about the prorogation. This 'making up time' idea seems like an attempt to recoup some lost 'political points'.

But my senses is it's too late. Canadians have seen the last few weeks how quickly the government moves to 'disunite' Canadians.. picking out selective groups to fight with. They are highly skilled at polarizing people. If it isn't saying opposition parties are critical of Canadian troops, it's reducing or cancelling grants to groups and organizations operating at arms length.

Rights and Democracy

Just saw an upsetting item on CTV's Power Play about the government's attempt to control the Rights and Democracy organization. What is most disturbing was government not realizing that administrative improvements were occuring prior to the new chair's arrival.

The current federal government has behaved in a way that suggests it 'demonizes' folks who disagree with them; or organizations that have different political points of views. (It sounds so much like many of our local radio talk show hosts). The current government is continually fighting with lots of interest groups.

We really do need a federal election!!!!!!!!!

Taxes and Public Services

Well once again there is discussion about one particular political party suggesting a raise in taxes. And once again, the 'tax cutting' crowd is all over them.

You know the last time I looked, our health system; our education system; our justice system; our road system; our garbage collection system; our police, fire fighting, and ambulance systems are all funded by public funds. There are a lot of services we rely on and have been traditionally supported by taxpayers.

I don't like paying taxes any more than anyone else. But I see there is a need for public service providers to have sufficient resources to discharge public responsibilities. I think the 'tax cutter crowd'as usual is so 'wrapped up' in their ideology they never acknowledge an essential role for government in these vital areas of our society.

This 'tax cut' preoccupation seems to have started with the beginning of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan's periods of office. Our world has become a 'less caring' society because of that. Private sector (usually non-governmenta agencies) have had to 'pick up the slack'.

Whenever next election comes I will support any party that recognizes the reality that taxes may need to be adjusted to support public services.

Federal Cabinet Shuffle - Deficit/Debt

Hmmm... not much to say about recent federal cabinet shuffle except to note 'preoccupation' with deficit/debt reduction.

Government had to spend money to help people most hurt by recession. Yet my understanding is much of the overall deficit/debt is direct result of federal government reducing revenue from consumption taxes like the GST. Its ideology got the best of them in the first two years of office.

The problem with tax reductions for the sake of tax reductions is that it eventually restricts government from mobilizing financial resources to help those less fortunate. If a government wants to do that, it then goes into debt. Clearly the path taken by our federal government.

What makes this most distressing is it enables them to act out their personal ideological preferences. We will see lots of cutbacks in next six months or so.

How this will impact on public services is frightening. As baby boomers retire in droves the next few years, gaps will develop in the provision of public services - as there are severe hiring restraints.

Of course a cynic might say a reduction in public services is the underlying goal of this current 'ideological'- based government.

Our solution is clear....in a democracy the people decide on government direction. Canadians need to hold our current federal government accountable for its financial decisions since 2006. We need a federal government that works to reduce the public deficit and debt through a balanced approach.. and that does include tax adjustments where warranted.

Administrivia - Maintaining a Blog

Well I think it was a year ago yesterday I posted my first blog. I have learned so much about blogging the last year. I have covered lots of topics varying from the personal (our 40th anniversary last year and my June 2009 radial surgery) to very public things (talk show radio hosts; prorogation etc.)

I just reviewed many older blog entries and even deleted a few that are clearly dated.

I really like the opportunity to share my views on a wide variety of topics and will continue to do so....

Prorogation Again - Politics - Engagement (cont)

Well it came and went. I attended along with over 3,000 other people the rally this afternoon in Ottawa. It was great seeing so many ordinary people in attendance.

While some issues on 'several agendas' did appear present, the vast majority of attendees stayed 'on message'. Our Prime Minister needs to know (as do all Canadians) that a partisan-based move to prorogue our Parliament is unacceptable.

But you know facebook groups and rallies can only do so much. Neither can 'force' any change on any person's part. But Canadians can force change. We can change the people who run our government.

The way we do that is to have an election and vote for change. I know many Canadians don't want an election in 2010. But our current government has shown itself to be 'out of touch' with mainstream Canadian opinion on so many issues.

We need an election, in my view, to resolve this 'disconnect'. I hope it comes sooner rather than later.

Saturday January 23

This coming Saturday may be a significant day in Canadian political history. Widespread political cyncism in Canada may give way to increased political engagement. Canadians upset at the partisan prorogation of our parliament are attending rallies across the country.

The size of these rallies will give an indication of how serious our new found political engagement has become. While not every opponent of prorogation will attend, those who do will be exhibiting an increased political awareness.

I was pleased to see that a demographic analysis of participants in the anti-prorogation group on facebook shows that baby boomers are joining the anti-prorogation campaign as are younger men and women across Canada.

If you live in Canada, will you be at your local anti-prorogation rally... I know I will....

Violence in Hockey - Simple Solution

The recent incident in a minor hockey league where a player appears to have deliberately hurt another player is a sharp (or is it stark) reminder of how violent our so-called 'national game' can become.

Every times this occurs there are calls for reducing violence in the game especially at the minor league level. Tinkering may occur but violence is still there.

YOu know really only one league has to reduce violence in its game and everyone else will follow. There is no point in junior hockey leagues reducing violence if players' role models play in a league that allows violence. Commentators who report on that league invariably keep up the old line that 'violence is part of the game'. Certain elements of crowds get an adrenalin rush when a fight occurs.

The fact that the National Hockey League allows violence to occur is the 'cause' of other leagues doing the same.

Without giving it a lot of thought I think a solution is for the NHL to set the standard of what is acceptable conduct on the ice. Any action which violates criminal law in Canada or the United States if performed 'off ice' should be prohibited 'on ice'.

If the NHL ever adopted that standards it would have to agree to impose heavy suspensions on violators no matter who they are, or how popular they may be, and be willing to take a short term financial impact were some fans choose not to go to a 'cleaner version' of the game.

Prorogation Again - Politics - Engagement

Well there are over 200,000 people in the facebook group...personally I hope it indicates a real willingness for political engagement amongst Canadians.

One indication of this will be real turnout at this coming weekend's rallies... even though I personally sometimes doubt their effectiveness I intend to go to my local rally. I hope any enthusiasm generated by the rallies will continue in the weeks and months ahead.

It is imperative we keep up this new level of political awareness of what's happening in our federal politics. Sometime in the next two years or so Canadians will have the opportunity to pass direct judgement on the actions of our Prime Minister in prorogation to avoid accountability for government decisions. That will be the time to fully act on any new political awareness.

Maintaining the new level of political engagement will be a challenge... but I think possible through use of the evolving social/new media.

Helplessness With What's Happening in Haiti

Such a sad helpless feeling watching the videos from Haiti. The earthquake has had a devastating impact on that poor country.

I only wish I could do more...Giving money is the preferred alternative but....

The images are so horrible....such an unnecessary loss of life.

But I am buoyed up by the sight of all the major countries of the world working on the relief effort. I only hope after the immediate emergency has passed, that the international community will make real strides in raising up living standards in a place like Haiti.

Prorogation & Social Networking Activism II

I heard some radio talk show hosts attempting to 'pooh pooh' electronic social networking activism. But it's becoming more and more clear that the level of public engagement is higher than it has been in Canada for many years. Who would have thought a term used only in parliamentary procedure literature would be the impetus for such a widespread public reaction to the 'shut down' of Canada's Parliament.

If nothing else to credit our Prime Minister for, he should be thanked for teaching so many more voters the meaning of the word 'prorogation'. I suspect most Canadians now know the meaning of this word.

While I have had some reservations about the January 23 demonstrations I did decide to join (or maybe rejoin) the large Facebook Group. I did that as online social networking activism is the way to go in the future. I put up an entry on their discussion board about last winter's campaign here in Ottawa against some sexist and offensive ads on billboards and buses announcing the arrival of a new Ottawa radio station.

More recently I participated in a campaign organized by a group resisting any attempts to reduce a 'woman's right to choose'. The origin of the campaign was a Pro-Choice group on facebook.

I applaud those who are using applications such as facebook and twitter to 'get the word' out.

Profiling

So nationals from 14 countries are subjected to additional screenings...but it's not racial profiling... hmmm.. sounds like some type of profiling. While I guess you can call it 'geographical profiling' but you know, it really is the same thing.

One can understand extra measures may be needed resulting from the near miss on that plane near Detroit two weeks ago..

But if media reports are right there was intelligence about the individual in question. Connecting the information would have stopped the near tragedy and would not have resulted in the long lines at airports. Don't get me wrong... we have to make air travel as safe as possible. Perhaps the system of human analysis of passengers' unusual behaviour/demeanour may be a better approach.

Tamils on that boat/Geogrphaic profiling

Read a story in media suggesting most of those Tamil from that boat last year are being released. While no one wants known terrorist groups organizing in our country it says something about the 'paranoia' which has gripped the western world since the horrible events of 911

There was much made since that dreadful day of having to be vigilant against possible terrorist connections. Yet so many innocent (predominantly Arab or Muslim) men have been mistreated by our justice and immigration system.

And it doesn't help that in some quarters (read talk show radio) calls continue for even more stringent restrictions.

The December 25 scare in the US (a frightful experience for all those involved) has now resulted in 'geographic' profiling.

Profiling is stereotyping. It is an illogical jump to conclude that all must be like the few.

2010 - Municipal Election Year in Ontario

Heard on news today two items about candidates for mayor in Ottawa and in Toronto. The announcement that Alex Cullen is running for mayor in Ottawa is good news. I have met him few times and follow his views on council quite regularly. He is, in my view, a progressive local politician not beholden to any vested interests. He is also a very hard worker.

Unless there is a drastic reason for not doing so I will be voting for this candidate.

I know less about the candidates running for mayor of Toronto but clearly both who announced today are quite important candidates in that election.

What A Wonderful Medium

Ever since I got up I have received many greetings from my facebook friends. Of course it helps that the site prompts folks about each person's birthday as it comes up. But still it's the thought that really counts.

New Ways of Communication

One of the most interesting events for me in 2009 occurred on a Saturday in November. I attended a four hour seminar on using social media by nonprofits. The presenters facilitated learning about how nonprofits can use outfits such as Twitter and Facebook to better get their message out.

But more importantly in my view, the seminar covered (as have several articles/books I have read since then) the need for organizations of all types to build what someone (not sure who) called the 'conversational' ability to communicate with its stakeholders.

This type of communication is 'two way'. Recipients of a 'message' should be encouraged to 'react' and 'comment' or 'respond' to a message. I think a key word (lingo) is 'collaboration'.

The seminar 'turned me on' to using social media even more than I have done in the past....since then I have lobbied 'hard' (some might say to the point of 'being a nuisance' ) for two groups to start using social media far more than in the past.

My efforts, while certainly not futile, have met with numerous objections.. but then my recollection is that is often what happens when one is advocating 'change'. Resistance to change is natural and human.

2009 In Review

Well it's nearly the end of the year... I think it was very early in 2009 that I began writing this blog...

What was most important for me this year.. without a doubt the events of this past August...my best friend and spouse and I celebrated 40 years of marriage. We really enjoyed celebrating it with friends in both Regina and Ottawa.

We also waited for and enjoyed the very recent news of the arrival of our fourth grandson.

(Friends of ours will receive a more personal account of our year in a few days)

The country of ours...well...somehow we did not have a federal election. Though I would not have minded one (it is the 'highest expression' of a democracy), I am glad one did not occur. Our electorate is quite polarized and I don't really know how an election would have turned out.

Some things I liked about the year in our political life in Canada -- well it's hard to say... maybe one bright light was the Ontario government's decision to have a new advisory group provide input into social policy - adjustments to welfare rates may be one result. But the province has a huge deficit brought on by the economic downturn so nothing may result from the group's work...

Lots of things not to like about the year past in the political world...our federal government's mean streak especially in dealing with critics and several Canadians seemingly abandoned when in trouble in other countries, and our almost absence or foot dragging on dealing with environmental issues... I was embarassed at our country's receiving of 'fossil' awards in Copenhagen.

Last winter's conflict in Israel and Gaza was most distressing. Both sides committed war crimes (according to human rights groups) yet neither appears to be taking that issue seriously...

The Sri Lankan civil war ended but justice has not arrived in that part of the country.

More locally I was continually amazed at how hypocritic and demonic' some of our talk show hosts in our city can be in their discussion of current events. Last winter's regrettable transit strike brought out the worst in their continuing war against public services and unions. Their attitudes towards Afghan detainees was most upsetting.

The continuning strife in Iran seem to predict interesting times in the month ahead.....

Federal Cabinet Ministers' Ratings

Just saw CTV's rating of our federal cabinet ministers....most make sense with a few notable exceptions.

They rate our Foreign Affairs Minister as a A- - saying he kept a low profile... gee how much lower could it get...

All he did all year was parrot an unsupportable line that people stranded in other countries were there for reasons beyond the control of the Canadian government... this despite clear evidence to the contrary. His line of reasoning always provoked (at least in my mind) the wordsl 'give me a break'. THe positive actions he apparently took in the Bahari case means I would have scored him a low C or a D.

A 'B' to the Minister of Justice... a normally non-partisan minister who seeemed to always be taking 'shots' at political opponents.. no wonder some of their so-called 'justice' bills are held up. The government's 'law and order' agenda seems to reflect ideology...maybe this is the way they appeal to their so-called base

I have difficulty grading our Immigration minister as a A. His Kairos speech in which he distorted that worthy NGO's position on the Middle East situation is not an event worthy of a A rating.

But their ratings of the Health Minister and International Trade Minister seem reasonable given everything they did this year...

Cairo. I can never say my children were not creative in naming their children. Cairo is my fourth grandchild. Others have such 'usual' names as Trey, Giovanni, and Dayvan.

Regardless of their names I have the typical grandpa or zayde attitude.. they are nothing but wonderful.

Using this quiet time to 'catch up' and am receiving lots of congratulatory messages on our new grandson from as far away as Egypt and Great Britain

Interesting to hear that some of the heads of commercial outfits in the USA whose greedy behaviour started the worldwide recession, are now behaving just as they did before the recession started. And they were supported by massive bailouts of public money.

Sort of makes you wonder what kind of economic system we have in this 21st century.

Heard a great example of this yesterday. One of Ottawa's most right wing talk show hosts was complaining about what he called 'CBC listeners' demonizing him in emails resulting from his appearance on a recent CBC radio show.

It was almost humorous listing to him. He criticized several writers for making comments about him...

But if one listens to his radio show anyone demonizing him pales in comparisons with his demonizing others who disagree with him. He is far better at demonizing 'others' than CBC listeners or anyone else for that matter. No one can approach this fellow in terms of demonizing others.

Mean Streak

I cannot understand the increasingly 'mean streak' shown by Canada's national government. The most recent example was their arbitrary cut off of Kairos - a Catholic service agency. A high level Cabinet Minister accused the organization of being anti-semitic.. only because it criticized certain policies of the Israeli government.

The current government recently went so far as to distribute literature in a number of areas of Canada accusing our main opposition party of being anti-semitic.

This bunch in power don't seem to understand one can criticize government all over the world but not get accused of being anti this or that group of people.

As a semite I can criticize policies of the Israeli government... but in the current federal government's eyes, that makes me an anti-semite.. an accustion that is totally and completely wrong!!

Copenhagen - Good or Disappointment

Well we have an agreement in Copenhagen.., but cannot tell if it is a good one or just so-so. Have been monitoring twitter for up to date tweets on the climate change conference.

It would be nice if it was a good one to SIGNIFICANTLY reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But if media reports are accurate, most folks will be disappointed.

But on the other hand some progress is better than none.

Like many many others will watch as more details emerge...the reality is our economies will have to change and become less driven by carbon.

Still unhappy with events in Copenhagen.. or more rightly.. unhappy at continuing attitude of Canadian authorities....

Mind you saw one suggestion for Canada which would improve our environmental impact in a significant way... Canada as a wealthy country should make a substantial contribution to helping developing countries cope with the effects of climate change. Will our political leaders have the ability to seize this opportunity?

It's amazing how otherwise bright folks still question the science of global warming and climate change. Just a touch of cold weather brings out all the conspiracy theories. Chatted about this with two other folks last evening who judge the degree of climate concern with this week's weather in Ottawa..how myopic can one be??

What fun it must have been today in Denmark thanks to some clever pranksters - had lots to chuckle about.. the first news release; then the second news release; and then apparently a video.. all hoaxes.. oh what fun some people had at the expense of the current federal government.

But it has a tragicomedic feature. OUr Canadian government is on the 'wrong side' of the environmental file ever since it came to power. Major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions WILL affect our economy. I only wish our political leaders would join the efforts to update all economies to recognize the new environmental order.

Governments of our two largest provinces appear to get it. Why cannot our federal government?

Today is the 61st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - a monumental point in history

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to wish the Declaration a happy birthday. Wouldn't it be nice if human rights abuses were only in our 'history'? Meaning wouldn't it be nice if no one suffered human rights abuses anywhere in this world?

I could list those countries where practices amounting to human rights abuses still exist today. But the list would be too long....organizations such as Amnesty International catalogue over 150 countries in which serious human rights abuses exist.

People all over the world including here in Canada must continue to work towards creating a situation where all peoples everywhere can genuinely wish each other and the UDHR a 'Happy Birthday' on some future December 10.

Afghan Detainee Controversy in Canada

From where I sit I think our federal government just doesn't get it....international law prohibits torture or doing anything which may contribute to torture.

Given the apparent 'culture' in Afghanistan our government regardless of political stripe should have avoided placing detainees in detention in a culture of torture. We need an independent judicial inquiry. It's all really simple to understand.. assuming one wants to understand.

The report of the RCMP Complaints Commissioner according to media report severly slams the RCMP for how they handled the tasering of the Polish man at Vancouver airport in 2007.

Some time ago I had a chat with a relatively new RCMP member who summed up all the commentary on the four officers' handling of the whole case.. they just blew it.

My sense is the three word title of this post describes their behaviour that day. Tragically there was a totally unnecessary loss of life.

A Huge Country We Have Here

Well after seven driving filled days we are back home...great to be ensconced in usual quarters.

What a variety of scenery in this country...flat prairies; beautiful lakes; wonderful valleys and rivers...

Experienced snow squalls.. not very nice if you are driving on already snow covered roads.. but appropriate levels of caution one can safety arrive at destinations.

Saw daughter and boyfriend, and two grandsons during our time away.. all are good which is great

The Most Important Relationship Batch of All

We all have relationships in our lives. They go up and down; hot and cold... but soem are more important than others.

Some time ago I talked about my relationship with my spouse who is also my best friend.. .we had a wonderful time this past summer marking our 40th wedding anniversary.

I want to talk about another very important relationship. It's the one we have with our children. YOu know even when they grow up they are still our children. There isn't much (some might say we do too much) we won't do for our children.

This next week we are spending many days travelling to and from where our adult child lives. To the extent we can, we are helping her sort out some significant life cycle issues she is facing.

One may ask why we are going to all the hassles of travel (I may post comments during our trip)....well like all parents we are doing it as we love her. She entered our lives nearly 3 decades ago and it's been an exciting time ever since. She has grown up into a mature woman with normal young people's dreams and goals.

We are there both literally (at times) and figuratively to support her.

So I see our Prime Minister is going to Copenhagen for the climate change summit. I really wish he was going to 'lead the charge' for a real climate change treaty. But it seems that is not the case. All reports I have seen suggest Canada is one of the impediments to real progress in the fight against climate change.

I understand he is also attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting. I hope he joins with thousands of others from around the world who have condemned the Government of Uganda for trying to criminalize homosexual conduct.

As those who use Facebook and Twitter know by now I attended a forum put on in Ottawa by the Alliance to End Homelessness.

In my view by far the most interesting part of the forum was a report on a Toronto group's success in converting its neighbourhood from a 'Not In My Back Yard' to 'Yes, in My Back Yard'.

The secret appears to be continuous dialogue with the neighbourhood.. both in door to door format by the individuals themselves. Neighbours get to know the new folks who will be their neighbours and lessen their fears of these new neighbours.

I also saw a report on a CMHC study on the same subject. It refers to communication as indicated above plus effective use of the media; development of relationships with local politicians, and development of a clear plan, an understanding of the community process, and persistence.

The only thing missing as I see it is how to deal with those centres of our community which are 'opinion leaders' in terms of stereotyping folks in affordable housing projects and homeless shelters. In many communitites these centres are 'radio talk show hosts'. Of coures using the strategies mentioned earlier may overcome the negativity of these types of naysayers.

Homelessness

Why do we have homeless folks in Canada? I believe a country like ours which is so blessed with resources should not have people with no place to stay... yet we do.

There is a need for more housing so no one has to live on the street.

Our shelters seemed to be always full.. in some communities I have heard any person who wants a place to sleep will always find there is a place..but one has to be in a 'crisis' to find such a place....

Wouldn't it be nice if homelessness did not exist???

I think I now know why I am uncomfortable with the current federal Conservative government. They seem masters at finding ways to set one group of Canadians against another group. Look at several things the past few days alone.

1 Not moving to really deal with allegations of torture of Afghan detaineees

2 Portraying another political party as anti-semitic when all know that is untrue

3 The continual refusal to treat Omar Khadr as a child soldier and resisting court decisions to repatriate him

Their actions (through their officials) dealing with the Canadian citizen in Kenya a few months ago and the Canadian citizen in Sudan are more of the same.

It's almost like they think they can build popular support by being 'mean' to people they disagree with.

Controversy Over Conservatives Ten Percenters

Gee how low can a political party go...apparently lower than anything done so far.

I am appalled at latest federal Conservative party portrayal of folks who criticize Israel as being anti-semitic. Since when does criticism of any country make one a "anti" towards the religion or people of the predominant ethnic or religious group in that country.

One can criticize Canada's policies and not be labelled anti-Canadian; one can criticize policies of the Vatican and not be anti-Catholic. One can criticize policies of Iran or Sudan and not be anti-Muslim. BUt if one express an iota of concern about Israel, some of its 'defenders' hurl the anti-semitism charge at the those expressing concern.

I saw all the furore in the media on this yesterday. The furore is justified in my view. No Canadian of any ethnic background should support a party that demonizes opposition. This current governing party appears determined to divide Canadians - it thinks it can gain politically by pitting groups of Canadians against each other.

Canadians we have to stop this at election time whenever that comes.

Cable TV - Local TV Stations Battles

Quite bemused by CRTC hearings on right now. So let's see local TV stations many of whom are part of profitable CTV networkswant payment from Bell and Rogers and other cable companies for local signals. Cable companies want to pass (and are passing costs on to consumers). Cable companies also distribute signals of local TV stations which increase advertising revenues for local TV stations. Hmm.. something doesn't make sense here...

Is there not a conglomerate knowns a Bell CTV which owns both Bell and CTV. Isn't this a case of one arm of the large outfit arguing with another arm of the same outfit.

CTV which is bemoaning its revenue shortall still manages to sponsor a 6 concert pop music series at Canada's National Arts Centre.

All this sort of makes one wonder why all the fuss???

Times Change - Activities Vary

For the last ten years I have been a member of an amazing group of human rights activists. All are members of English speaking branch of Amnesty International Canada.

The organization has a nearly half century long live in our world. It is one of the largest human rights organizations in existence today. It is a widely dispersed membership organization in countries all over the world.

It has shown itself to be quite adapt to changing circumstances. Whether one looks at its various websites or chats with activists one can see it has joined the social network world.

In Canada at least it has found a way to actively engage people who are post 'baby boomers'. It has had very young adults hold top positions in its volunteer leadership.

The 'amazing group' I spoke about earlier are called fieldworkers. We have been about 50 really activist people. Any reader in Canada interested in learning more can contact staff via www.amnesty.ca.

Having said all this it is time to move on in my life... interests do change over one's life. I remain a committed human rights activist.

anti HST grouping in Ontario and BC and Other Stuff

It 'pains' me to see progressive political forces in BC and Ontario aligning themselves with traditonally more conservative forces. It's an unholy alliance.

Some time ago I happened to run into a government MLA in Ontario. He reminded me that there will be a HST-credit system similar to the GST credit. While the amounts paid to low income earners may not be as much as it should be (I certainly agree it should be more), the practice of paying (non taxable) credits to low income folks is good public policy.

See our government has brought in new citizenship handbook.. wanna have a good look at it but have some anxst over media reports it may be part of a 'rebranding' exercise.

Spent an informative 4 hours this past weekend learning how to use social media. Lots of new stuff to try out.. including making this blog more widely known.

Met some local folks involved in promoting 'Charter of Compassion'. All faiths support compassion. Cannot decide if the Charter will make a difference...like so many other things time will tell.

Have written on consumption taxes a few weeks ago. I see our province is bringing in enabling legislation today.

November 14 is Diabetes Day

Tomorrow.. Saturday is World Diabetes Day. All of us are touched directly or indirectly by diabetes. It especially affects people in the Aboriginal community here in Canada. We have Aboriginal relatives and can attest to the sadness it causes.

Thousands of people are unaware they have diabetes.. such a reality is so sad.

It's been a while so here goes.....

Did the two minute silence thing yesterday. We must always remember our history. Started wondering though about whether we should be updating our practices on November 11 to recognize our country's changing family structures. Our silver cross mother role...maybe it's time to recognize other than traditional roles of parents of soldiers we lose. With the increasing acceptability of same sex relationships maybe it's time to have one 'silver cross parent' who is a member of our lesbian or gay community. Also is 'silver cross' most appropriate in a multicultural society?

Saw somewhere that Palestinian rival groups may be looking at some type of agreement. Gee if they do agree, then maybe them and Israelis could develop some type of agreement too.. wouldn't that be wonderful....

I understand Canada's highest court is to rule soon on Khadr. I hope they confirm lower courts' views that he is a child soldier and must be repatriated....

Somewhat bemused at Lady Thatcher incident where death of a federal Cabinet Minister's pet was mistaken for news about former British Prime Minister of same name.

Oh yes... I got H1N1 flu shot last Sunday... experience went well....

H1N1 Vaccine

I am in the 'higher risk' group... so I'll be getting a vaccine sooner rather than later. I trust the medical professionals.

Have little patient with those who don't. Even if you don't think you'll come down with H1N1 infection you could infect others who are close to you.. get the shot!!

Imagine a worst case scenario... a parent refuses to have their child vaccinated; and their child gets the flu...how awful that would be.. get the shot!

Like everyone else I worry about long lineups....but am still getting the shot!

We have to to something to protect our world. When our political leaders meet later this year we must reach agreement to protect our planet.

While doing this our leaders in the developing world must understand that as the principal causes of planet degradation, they must take the lead in reducing our footprint. It's unfair to expect countries who have contributed little to our carbon footprint to bear the same responsibility for its reduction as our most developed countries.

I am quite disappointed to hear our own government is now seen as a laggard on effective climate change prevention action.

Local Multifaith Housing Group is Making a Difference

As most know I live in the national capital of Canada. A very innovative group is making a difference in the pressing need for more affordable housing in our community. About seven years ago a group of leaders in a number of faith communities banded together in what is now called the Multifaith Housing Initiative.

Despite the challenges of working together in a new field the Initiative has been quite successful in increasing the supply of affordable housing in our community.

Has It Come to This. Canadian Politics in 2009

I think I read something today about one of Canada's political leaders has denied an intention to have an 'adult discussion with Canadians' on how to get our public finances out of debt.

If this is true it is a regrettable state of affairs in our great country. Realistic analysis of the size of our public deficit and debt clearly points to the necessity of increasing government revenues. Governments' main source of revevnue is taxation and other fees charged for public services.

Yet political leaders of all stripes have 'swallowed' all the anti-tax line first propagated by people like Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher and embraced by Canadian politicians like Michael Harris and Stephen Harper.

Our country has become less caring since the early 1980's as government have withdrawn from many of our innovative social programs.. all in the interest of reducing taxes. Our public sector's ability to effect real social and economic change is limited due to successive, and in some cases, really unnecessary tax cuts.

Taxes pay for health care, education, transportation infrastructure, welfare, emergency protection etc. etc. THese are important to society and should be properly funded...which is NOT happening now thanks to widespread preoccupation with 'cutting taxes'.

My Views on Consumption Taxes Like HST

Sales taxes are essentially unfair but necessary for the reasons
outlined below.

They are 'consumption taxes'.. the more you consume a good or service
the more you pay. They are unfair as the tax paid represents a greater
portion of a person's disposable income if the person is at a low income
level. They unfairly penalize lower income earners.

However, some argue it's a good tax as high income earners pay a lot of
consumption tax as they consume more goods and services (including what we
might call luxury goods and services).

Also a consumption tax may cause a desireable change of public/consumer
behaviour. That is why the carbon tax idea was good public policy

What some governments do (federal does although it is not good enough),
is (either on the income tax form or via periodic payments), is pay flat
credits to people. Low income Canadians receive quarterly payments from the federal government called GST credits. They don't compensate for all GST paid but certainly provide some help.

Ontario government is planning on giving grants to every person to help with the transition to the HST.

Quebec, and some of the Atlantic provinces have a HST.

Finally many opponents of the HST are right wing conservatives who
dislike government doing anything in our society. They mistakenly believe
things like health care; education; welfare; emergency services don't cost
anything. Governments need revenue to pay for these activities. It pains
me to see federal and provincial NDP politicians agreeing with the likes of
Stephen Harper, Michael Harris etc.(I could add as wll most of the crowd who are on
or who phone talk radio stations)
